Six years ago, I made a tough, courageous and important decision in my life. At that time, my kids were 4 & 6 respectively, and same as many working mothers in Hong Kong, I struggled a lot on balancing work and family.
After considering for a long time, in order to have more flexibility to take care of my two young kids, I decided to leave my comfort zone. A career that I love and had been doing since my graduation. An amazing team with lovely colleagues who are also my true friends in life. Great leaders who trusted me and treated me as their business partner. Stable and good income as well as future advancement opportunities.
The journey of moving from HR to headhunting was extremely not easy, especially in the competitive private banking industry. Struggle, rejection, uncertainty, doubt, disappointment, are the words that always appeared at the beginning of my journey.
But thanks God that during the difficult time, I was surrounded by my very supportive family members and good friends. I reminded myself to go back to the purpose of making the change, count the blessings rather than difficulties and focus on progress & direction instead of the current situation. All these gave me inner strength to stay positive, courage to face different challenges and assurance that I'm doing the right things.
Looking back the journey, it's tough but I am thankful for making the decision. Besides achieving my original objective, I found that I gained much more unexpectedly. I knew many good friends in my company and in the industry.
Some young candidates who asked me for advice in their early stage of their career, now became top performers and shining stars in their companies. Some new managers whom I advised them on people management and hiring strategy, now took up Market Heads or even Regional Heads in the banks.
The satisfaction of witnessing and participating in one’s growth and success is far beyond than that of closing a case for me.
How about next?
Six years after my previous adventure, when my elder daughter is going to enter secondary school, a question repeatedly came to my mind, “Now, your kids are more independent and you can have more time, what do you want to do to make your life more meaningful?"
I then realized that, while I want to continue to be a headhunter & trusted career advisor for my candidates, I also want to equip myself to be a professional coach. By becoming a professional coach, I can walk together with more people to discover their purpose, and support them to grow and change, with an objective for them to lead a more fulfilling life.
Since then, I attended professional coaching training from the Coaches Training Institute (the oldest and largest in-person coach training organization in the world). And I decided to set up my company “Shiloh Coaching & Consulting”.
About Shiloh
"Shiloh" is a Hebrew word meaning "place of peace".
I truly hope that Shiloh can be a place of peace for individuals to discover their purpose, navigate their transformations and find fulfillment in their work and life. I also hope that my experience as an HR, a headhunter, a coach, a working mom of two kids can support people on their journeys.
I’m sure the path ahead is again not easy. But with the learning I had from my previous adventure, I’m sure that when I look back six years later from now, I will be grateful for stepping out of the comfort zone again.
